It’s official! After years of rogue celebrations in honor of the toilet every Nov. 19, World Toilet Day has finally become an official international holiday, recognized by the United Nations!!
World Toilet Day was started in 2002 by Jack Sim of the World Toilet Organization. Each year, the world rejoices over the miracle that is a modern toilet, and remembers the 40% of the world living–and often dying–without access to safe toilets.
There are so many ways for you to take part in World Toilet Day! Here are just a few.
The POOP Project and Flush: The Documentary are releasing a series of short films offering lots of different reasons to #LiftTheLid and start making a stink about toilets. Check out our first video below, and take the Pooper Pledge yourself! Upload it to the interwebs, and tell the world why you think it’s time to #LiftTheLid. (Need some ideas? There are TONS of reasons why even citizens of the developed world should be talking toilets on the PHLUSH Toilets USA page.)
Now it’s your turn! Ready?
I, _______, proudly acknowledge that I have a body. Although my mouth makes me a consumer, I am not defined by this alone. I am also a creator, a producer, and a collaborator with the earth. From this day forward, I reject the myth of waste. I will consume with conscience and take responsibility for my shit. I will no longer flush and forget. I am a Pooper. That’s right. You heard me. I AM A POOPER!
2. Say #ThankYouToilet
We all need to use the toilet, and you never know when the need will strike. While most of us can simply pop into the nearest Starbucks for a poop, the unhoused often have no such luck. Too often the message is: “No shirt, no shoes, no shit.” Our dear friends at Portland PHLUSH are tireless advocates for public toilets, and worked with Fashion Buddha to put together this beautiful stop-motion short detailing this particular plight.
The always-creative WASH United invites you to Celebrate the Toilet and write a message on their digital stall wall. You can also #CelebrateTheToilet on Twitter by submitting your favorite toilet photos with the eponymous hashtag. (Those photos will have to do until DefeatDD releases their upcoming toilet calendar. It’s going to be awesome! And I know, because I helped judge the submissions )
4. Find a Live Event Near You
Our friends over at WASH Advocates rounded up more World Toilet Day events than you can shake a plunger at. From San Francisco to Singapore, find out how the world is cheering on the water closet!
5. Become An Advocate
Help us spread the word about why toilets are so important. Know someone in the media who should be covering this story or might want to interview Jack Sim, Mr. Toilet himself? Click here to access the WTD 2013 Media Kit.
Feeling so passionate about the privy that you want to make your own webpage? Find everything you need–fact sheets, sample tweets, graphics, videos and more–on PHLUSH’s Celebrate the Toilet toolkit. Oh. Yeah.
Are you a visual learner? Infograph it! Check out the awesome infographic below, bought to you by the team at Splashdirect, and share it on your own page! (They’ve also got a cool blogging contest you UK residents can submit to.)
Whatever you do this World Toilet Day, may you poop with pride, and in peace.
Yours in balance,
Shawn “The Puru” Shafner
